Fluoride in Children's Toothpaste is Useful in Preventing Cavities

Fluoride is an important ingredient in toothpaste which plays a role in maintaining healthy teeth and preventing cavities. However, many parents are still hesitant to use fluoride toothpaste on their children because they are worried about the risks. Fluoride is a natural mineral found in water, soil, and some foods. This mineral has an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and preventing cavities, so it is commonly found in toothpaste.

The main benefit of fluoride is that it strengthens tooth enamel, namely the outer layer of teeth that protects them from damage. Fluoride helps tooth enamel become more resistant to acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, thereby preventing cavities.

Apart from that, fluoride also helps the remineralization process, which is the process of restoring tooth enamel that has been damaged by acid. Fluoride can help damaged teeth to repair and prevent further damage. Drg. Alana Aluditasari, a dentist specializing in pediatric dentistry, explains the benefits and risks of fluoride content in children's toothpaste.

"The main need for teeth is the fluoride content," said Alana on Monday, March 18 2024. The need for fluoride toothpaste for children begins when the child's first tooth grows. "Use fluoride toothpaste specifically for children from the moment the first teeth emerge," explained Alana.

This indicates the importance of dental treatment with fluoride as early as possible in children. Even though fluoride content can be found in mineral water and some foods, there is no guarantee that the water and food consumed by children can meet children's fluoride needs. Therefore, it can be fulfilled through toothpaste.

Adjust Toothpaste Use for Children

Currently, there are 2 types of toothpaste, namely for children and for adults. What is different is usually the content in the toothpaste and there are several flavorings in children's toothpaste to make your little one more comfortable when brushing their teeth.

Parents should ensure that children use children's toothpaste until they are 7 years old. "It has to be a special children's toothpaste, because the difference is the fluoride level. In adult toothpaste, the fluoride level is higher, while in children's toothpaste the fluoride level is small," explained Alana.

So, it is important for parents to adjust the use of toothpaste to their children so that the content is appropriate. Apart from the type of toothpaste, parents must also pay attention to the amount they use. For children under 2 years of age, the amount of toothpaste that can be used is the size of a grain of rice, while for children over 3 years of age, the amount of toothpaste that can be used is the size of a pea.

Dangers of Consuming Too Much Fluoride

Although fluoride has many benefits for dental health, excessive consumption of fluoride can cause negative side effects. Special children's toothpastes usually come with several flavorings that can make children happy to swallow. However, parents must be aware of this.

Alana explained that, "Don't snack on the toothpaste. Why? Because too much fluoride will have an effect on his teeth which will become brittle. So, if he doesn't have enough fluoride he will be brittle, too much fluoride will make him brittle too."

Consuming too much fluoride will lead to fluorosis, which is a condition where the teeth will have white spots and tooth brittleness. "Excessive anything is not good, so just follow the dosage. If you only follow the dosage 2 to 3 times a day, it's definitely safe," said Alana.

COVID-19 Virus Omicron XBB.1.16 Being Monitored by WHO

COVID-19 virus in late November 2021, the world received news of a new variant of the COVID-19, known as Omicron XBB.1.16. This variant was first detected in South Africa and has since spread to other countries around the world.

The emergence of Omicron XBB.1.16 caused concern among health officials and the general public alike. This was due to the fact that early reports suggested that it may be more transmissible than previous variants, and that it may be more resistant to existing vaccines.

COVID-19 Virus Omicron XBB.1.16 Being Monitored by WHO
COVID-19 Virus Omicron XBB.1.16

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Omicron XBB.1.16 as a variant of concern (VOC), which means that it is considered to be a significant threat to global public health. The WHO has also noted that the variant has a large number of mutations, particularly in the spike protein of the virus, which is the target of most vaccines.

One of the key concerns about Omicron XBB.1.16 is its potential to evade the immune system. Preliminary studies have suggested that the variant may be less susceptible to neutralization by some monoclonal antibodies and convalescent plasma from people who have recovered from previous COVID-19 infections. However, it is still unclear how much of an impact this may have on the effectiveness of existing vaccines.

Despite these concerns, it is important to note that scientists and health officials are still learning about Omicron XBB.1.16 and its potential impact on public health. There is still much that is unknown about the variant, including its true level of transmissibility and virulence.

In response to the emergence of Omicron XBB.1.16, many countries have taken steps to limit travel from affected regions and to increase testing and surveillance measures. Additionally, researchers and vaccine manufacturers are working to develop new vaccines and treatments that may be more effective against the variant.

In conclusion, the emergence of Omicron XBB.1.16 has highlighted the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness. While much is still unknown about the variant, it is clear that it has the potential to cause significant harm if left unchecked. It is important that individuals and governments continue to follow public health guidelines and take steps to protect themselves and their communities.

Bleeding gums: Causes And Prevention

Bleeding gums can be caused by many factors, starting with something as simple as poor brushing  or flossing technique. When you've finished brushing your teeth and coughed up the rest of the toothpaste, you'll see some blood. When you look in the mirror, your gums seem to bleed. Or it can also indicate an underlying medical condition.
Bleeding Gums

Causes of Bleeding Gums

According to MedlinePlus, the main cause of bleeding gums is plaque buildup in the gums. This can lead to a condition called gingivitis or gingivitis.

Plaque that is not removed or accumulates hardens and forms tartar. This can lead to increased bleeding and a more advanced form of gum and jaw disease called periodontal disease.

Other causes of bleeding gums can include:

  • Bleeding disorders.
  • Brushing teeth too hard.
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy.
  • Ill-fitting dentures or other dental appliances.
  • Improper dental flossing.
  • Infection, which can occur in the teeth or in the gums.
  • Leukemia, a type of blood cancer.
  • Skurvi, a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C.
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Diabetes.

Bleeding Gums home remedies

Make  a habit of seeing the dentist early at least once every six months, even if you don't have any dental or oral problems. During these regular visits, your dentist can remove  plaque.

Brush your teeth gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day, it would be even better if you brush your teeth after every meal. In addition, flossing your teeth twice a day can prevent plaque buildup and turning into tartar.

Your dentist may prescribe a  salt water or hydrogen peroxide and water mouthwash, or a mouthwash specifically formulated to treat gingivitis. Some mouthwashes contain alcohol, so consult your dentist before using them.

A healthy and balanced diet can also be useful. Try to avoid snacking  and limit your carbohydrate intake.

Home remedy tips that may help bleeding gums include:

  • Perform a periodontal examination.
  • Avoid using tobacco can make bleeding gums worse. Tobacco can also mask other problems that cause bleeding gums.
  • Control bleeding gums by applying direct pressure to the gums with gauze soaked in ice water.
  • If you have been diagnosed with a vitamin deficiency, take vitamin supplements as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid aspirin unless your doctor recommends taking it.
  • If a medication side effect causes bleeding gums, ask your doctor to prescribe another medication. Never change medications without first talking to your doctor.
  • Use an oral irrigation device on low setting to massage the gums.
  • See a dentist if dentures or other dental appliances don't fit or cause painful areas of the gums.
  • Follow the dentist's instructions on how to brush and floss your teeth so you don't injure your gums.

It is best to see a dentist immediately if you experience the following:

  • Severe or long-term (chronic) bleeding.
  • Gums continue to bleed even after being treated.
  • Bleeding gums accompanied by other unexplained symptoms.
  • The dentist will examine the teeth and gums in addition to asking about symptoms. The dentist will also ask about oral care habits. You may also be asked about your diet and medications used.

Other tests that may be done include:

  • Blood count or blood differential test.
  • X-ray of teeth and jawbone.
  • Treatment from a doctor
  • Bleeding Gums Should Not Be Underestimated, Here's the Reason! illustration of treatments that cause bleeding gums (pexels.com/Andrea Piacquadio)
  • Treatment of bleeding gums will be adjusted to the severity, citing the National Health Service.

In the early stages, the dentist will:

  • Give advice on how to keep your teeth clean, for example using an interdental brush.
  • Advise to quit smoking, if you smoke.
  • Suggest professional teeth cleaning.

If gum disease is serious, you may need:

  • Thorough cleaning (deep cleaning) under the gums.
  • Antibiotics.
  • Extraction of several teeth.
  • Gum surgery.

Prevention

If you see signs of gum disease, try to pay attention to your daily dental care. Described on the healthdirect page, here's how to prevent gum disease and maintain healthy gums:

  • Brush your teeth after every meal, for at least two minutes.
  • Use dental floss every day.
  • If your gums hurt, use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Antibacterial mouthwash can also help. Ask your dentist about this because sometimes medical mouthwashes can cause side effects.
  • Dentists can also provide advice on how to care for your teeth and mouth.
  • If your gums bleed regularly or worry you, make an appointment with your dentist. This could be a sign that something is wrong and requires medical intervention.

The Hawthorn Berry A Health Benefits

The Hawthorn Berry or hawthorn is a fruit that grows on shrubs of the genus Crataegeus. This fruit is widely grown in parts of Asia, Europe, and North America. Despite its small size, it has many health benefits.  Besides the healthy properties, hawthorn berries are also rich in nutrients and have a unique taste. Intrigued by this little fruit?Learn more!

Hawthorn berries provide the body with antioxidants

According to Healthline, hawthorn berries are a source of polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidant compounds found in plants. Polyphenol antioxidants are effective at neutralizing unstable molecules such as free radicals when present in large amounts. Additionally, the polyphenols in hawthorn berries have many health benefits, including preventing and reducing the risk of asthma, infections, type 2 diabetes, early-stage cancer, and heart problems.

Hawthorn Berries Help Lower Blood Pressure

Did you know that  hawthorn berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat high blood pressure?According to Indigo Herbs, hawthorn berries contain high levels of powerful antioxidants called potent vasodilators, which help keep blood pressure (hypertension) high.

These antioxidants work by relaxing constricted blood vessels in the body. As a result, hawthorn berries help reduce high blood pressure.

 Prevents hair loss

Some hair care and hair growth products contain hawthorn berries as a natural ingredient. This is because  hawthorn berries have historically been "promising"; to stimulate the growth and size of hair follicles in mice. This is due to the polyphenol content.

How to use hawthorn fruits for hair? Many people prefer to add hawthorn berries to dishes, for example to make syrup for pancakes. Others invest in natural hair care products like hawthorn butter or  tonic.

World Kidney Day: Chronic Kidney Disease Often Asymptomatic

World Kidney Day: Chronic Kidney Disease Often Asymptomatic

World Kidney Day is celebrated every second Thursday in March. In 2023, World Kidney Day is celebrated on March 9. This momentum aims to increase awareness of the importance of kidney health as well as increase awareness of kidney disease.

Kidneys are important organs for filtering blood and separating it from components that are no longer needed by the body. Components that are no longer used are then excreted in the form of urine. When there is a problem with the kidney, its function will decrease.

1. Kidney disease is one of the leading causes of death and the highest cost

Non-communicable diseases are the cause of death in the world and in Indonesia. In Indonesia, chronic kidney disease is the 10th leading cause of death.

Apart from being the most common cause of death, kidney disease is also the highest cause of financing. Most of the financing is dominated by heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Meanwhile, kidney failure ranks 4th with the highest financing.

2. World Kidney Day: Causes of chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease has increased in prevalence from 2 per mil in 2013 to 3.8 per mil in 2018. This number is highest in the age range of 65 to 74 years, followed by those aged 75 years and over, and aged 55 to 64 years.

Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (P2PTM) of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Eva Susanti, S.Kp, M.Kes said at the 2023 World Kidney Day Commemoration event which was broadcast online, that there are risk factors for chronic kidney disease that can be changed and cannot be changed.

Factors that can be changed include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, consumption of pain relievers, inflammation of the kidneys, and use of drugs, psychotropics, and addictive substances.

Meanwhile, risk factors that cannot be changed are a family history of kidney disease, premature birth, trauma to the abdominal area, and certain types of diseases, such as lupus.

3. World Kidney Day: Diabetes is the highest cause of chronic kidney disease

On the same occasion, dr. Wachid Putranto, SpPD-KGH, FINASIM from the Indonesian Nephrology Association (Pernefri) explained that chronic kidney disease is kidney damage both structural and functional that occurs for more than 3 months and progresses progressively. Progressive means that the condition is getting worse over time.

The highest cause of chronic kidney disease is diabetes. The next cause is hypertension, inflammation of the kidneys, cysts on the kidneys, and others.

Chronic kidney disease cannot be cured. Therefore, the goal of treatment is not to cure, but to prevent worsening of kidney function and prevent early death.

4. Chronic kidney disease is often asymptomatic

according to dr. Wachid, chronic kidney disease is often asymptomatic. Usually, new symptoms appear when it is at an advanced stage. Therefore, it is very important to carry out early detection.

He asked to be vigilant if you have foamy urine, red urine, or have hypertension. If it is still in the early stages it has been detected, then it can be prevented so that the condition does not get worse.

5. Prevention of chronic kidney disease

Prevention of chronic kidney disease by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is important to avoid taking random drugs. If you already have a disease, it is important to control the disease, such as hypertension or diabetes.

In addition, maintaining an ideal body weight and doing regular physical activity are also important for preventing chronic kidney disease. Regular kidney function checks are also important to know kidney health.

Chronic kidney disease is often asymptomatic in its early stages. Therefore, it is very important to do early detection so it is not too late. If detected early, you can get immediate treatment so that a worse condition can be prevented.
